The Kilpisjärvi region preserves some of the oldest rocks in northern Europe directly beneath the Great Unconformity, one of the world's best-known geological boundaries.
What makes the complex exceptional? The Rommaeno Complex in northwestern Finnish Lapland preserves some of the oldest rocks in northern Europe, including Archaean crust up to 3.2 billion years old. In the westernmost Käsivarsi area, the complex lies directly beneath one of Earth's most celebrated geological boundaries, the Great Unconformity, where much younger sedimentary rocks of the Caledonian mountain belt rest on ancient crystalline basement following an extraordinary gap in the geological record. Subsequent burial beneath the Caledonian nappes protected the Archaean basement from erosion, preserving an exceptional record of the early continental crust.
Why does this matter scientifically? Extensive fell exposures provide continuous bedrock outcrops across a rugged mountain landscape, allowing crustal architecture, deformation patterns and magmatic relationships to be investigated at the scale of an entire Archaean crustal block. Together, these characteristics make the Rommaeno Complex a unique natural laboratory, where the preserved Archaean basement beneath the Great Unconformity provides a rare window into the processes that formed Earth's earliest continental crust.
